The Kampala Metropolitan Zone (KMZ) joined the global Adventist community in commemorating the End It Now Sabbath, an annual day set aside by the General Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to raise awareness and stand against all forms of abuse.

This year’s commemoration carried the powerful theme: “Abuse of the Elderly – Honor Your Father and Mother.” The theme drew from the biblical commandment found in Exodus 20:12, reminding believers of the duty to respect, care for, and honor their parents and elderly members of society. It called attention not only to abuse in its various forms but also to neglect and disregard often experienced by senior citizens in homes and communities.

Across the KMZ, local congregations observed the day in unique ways. In some churches, women led out in the worship services, delivering messages of hope, advocacy, and responsibility. Sermons, children’s stories, and music were all centered on uplifting the dignity of the elderly, highlighting their value as pillars of faith and wisdom in families and communities.

Other congregations took the message beyond church walls by organizing community outreaches. Women’s ministries teams visited elderly members in neighborhoods, providing encouragement, food items, and companionship. These gestures were received with joy and appreciation, reinforcing the message that the church stands united against abuse and neglect of the aged.

Leaders emphasized that protecting the elderly is not only a biblical mandate but also a moral responsibility. They called on families, communities, and the wider society to treat elderly persons with love, patience, and respect, safeguarding their rights and wellbeing.

The End It Now campaign, which began under the auspices of the General Conference, continues to expand its focus to address different dimensions of abuse each year. By spotlighting the plight of the elderly in this year’s theme, the initiative resonates with growing global concerns about aging populations and the vulnerabilities that come with advanced age.
