Nairobi, Kenya – August 25, 2025
The East-Central Africa Division (ECD) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church officially opened its extended council yesterday in Nairobi, Kenya, with a spirit of prayer, unity, and mission-focused deliberation. The highly anticipated session is primarily dedicated to electing new leaders who will steer the Division and its unions through the coming years.
The opening ceremony was presided over by Pastor Blasius Ruguri, who welcomed delegates from across the Division’s territories, which include Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. His opening address emphasized the need for Christ-centered leadership that prioritizes mission, integrity, and service.
“God is calling us to raise leaders who are more than administrators. We need leaders who will inspire the church to move forward with the gospel mission in every village, town, and city,” Pastor Ruguri said during his keynote address.

Nomination Committee to Begin Work Today
Following the successful start of the council, attention today shifts to the Nomination Committee (NomCom), which begins its work today, 26th August 2025 at 9:00 a.m. The committee is tasked with recommending names for the ECD departmental officials and the executive committees of respective unions within the Division.
Delegates and members of the Adventist community are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this process, with results expected to be released before the close of the day. These decisions will shape the leadership of the church in the region, with many expressing prayers and hopes for leaders who are both visionary and committed to the church’s mission.
Anticipation in Uganda
Uganda, in particular, is watching the session with great interest. With Dr. Moses Maka Ndimukika recently elevated to the position of Executive Secretary of the ECD, the Uganda Union Mission is set to receive a new president. This transition is viewed as both an opportunity and a challenge for the Adventist community in Uganda, as it seeks to continue strengthening its mission work, expanding its membership, and fostering unity.

“We are praying for godly leaders who will build on the work done by Dr. Ndimukika and push the mission even further,”.
A Prayerful and Pivotal Session
The ECD extended council is regarded as one of the most significant gatherings in the Division’s calendar, setting the direction for leadership and mission over the next term. As delegates deliberate and pray, members across the Division are urged to join in prayer for a fruitful session, that those chosen will embody humility, servant-leadership, and commitment to the gospel commission.
